Dec. 5-6 – Pickering Ringette Tournament

The Bench. Ajax U14AA (Tween) Ringette Team competed in the annual Pickering Ringette Tournament this past weekend and took home the Gold Medal in a very exciting, talented divison.

The first game of the tournament was against local rivals Whitby, it was a 2-2 tie at the end of the first period but the girls came back with an impressive 8-3 win. The team saw a 4-1 win over Cambridge in their second game. The next day the team counted another win, 4-1 against Mississuaga. The last game of the round-robin was a hard fought game against the first place team in the league, London, which they lost 5-2, sending London into the final undefeated. After 3 years of trying the Ajax team had yet to score a win against this London team. At the end of the first period the score saw London up 3-2. With just over a minute left in the game the score sat at 5-4 for London, Ajax scored to tie the game, sending them into overtime. With a Ajax player in the penalty box the team managed to slip one by the London goalie for the win. This was a total team effort, goal scoring and assists were equally shared among the entire team. Forwards Amy Butler, Taylor Coulter, Emily Forbes, Chantel Gauthier, Serena Gucciardi, Maddie Horwood, Holly Lindensmith, and Lauren McClenaghan. A extremely strong defense made up of Alexa Battler, Dana Holstead-Young, Alexis Navarro and Mikhaela Slavin. The team received outstanding goaltending by Sami Pontone the entire weekend.

The team will be heading off in early January to Cambridge for their first of two ranking tournaments towards their provincial standing. The team is coached by Laurence Slavin with Asst. Coaches - Paul Battler, Paul Gauthier & Deb Battler; Goalie Coach - Steve Horwood; Manager – Denise Pontone. Team Sponsor - Bench. clothing.
